Last year, Mono (pictured) and World's End Girlfriend — two very dissimilar artists from Japan — got together last year to challenge themselves and their listeners. Palmless Prayer / Mass Murder Refrain (Temporary Residence) — more of a split symphony than a split EP — opens with string strains that commingle with piano and horns. It's over a half-hour before we hear any guitar, nearly twice that before we hear drums, yet the music amasses to such a chilling peak that you absolutely will not remove your headphones until the last note is through ringing. Hearing both artists reach so far beyond their boundaries is so impressive that it's sad to hear reports from other cities indicating they're playing separate sets this tour. Both will provide plenty of individual satisfaction, though, whether you're talking about Mono's ferocious clipped-amp post-rock swell or WEG's quirky electronic stitchery. And besides, who's to say a 75-minute opus couldn't work as an encore collabo?
