Culinary Mysteries Solved

Q: I'm sick of boring potato and macaroni salads. Are there any local restaurants or markets that offer some interesting variations?

A: Subtle but extremely satisfying, Sweet Lucy's Steakhouse's (7500 State Road, 215-287-1356) macaroni salad is dubbed "classic" by the menu. Of course, this is just a cloaking device for their super-secret recipe. While they ain't saying how they do it, the mayo blend is spicier than the norm and refreshing to boot. At Baltimore Crab & Seafood (4800 Spruce St.; 215-472-7040), tuna is the key ingredient in the macaroni salad, followed by chopped slender carrots, farm-fresh eggs and homemade mayo salad dressing.

Bacchus Market & Catering's (2300 Spruce St., 215-545-6656) picnic potato salad features a bold, tangy mustard dill mixture that matches well with mounds of sour cream and quartered baby red potatoes. (Their ham and macaroni salad is also worth a pop-in.)

For the day tripper, The Philly Buffet at Chester County's Mendenhall Inn (323 Kennett Pike, Chadds Ford, 610-388-1181) serves respectable renditions of the cheesesteak and Philly-made Italian sausages — all of which are accompanied by a sweetly seasoned, marinated red onion and red potato salad.
