John "JB" Bigham, the Chicago born/L.A.-based mastermind behind power trio The Soul of John Black, has summoned the ghost of Jimi Hendrix with his electrifying live shows, including a star-making tour at SXSW in March that curdled the cowboy hats with its raw energy. The southpaw guitarist (equally proficient on acoustic, electric and slide) leads his band through a crowded intersection of soul, swampy blues, hip-hop and Afro-folk. His remarkable résumé aside — a near-decade playing guitar and keys with Fishbone, working with Miles Davis, and doing session work with everyone from Everlast to Eminem — Bigham's own songs are jarring in their potency. The John Lee Hooker-meets-Al Green vocals turn heads, and his slinky fretwork keeps audiences coming back for more. On TSoJB's new album, The Good Girl Blues (Cadabra), Bigham pays homage to his favorite blues pioneers and soul crooners while creating something familiar and different, all at once.
