John Karpinski: Harry and Zeke: Nautical Tales & High Flying Adventures
Through June 2, University City Arts League, 4226 Spruce St., 215-382-7811, www.ucartsleague.org

These small drawings from John Karpinski's developing comic strip follow two friends, Harry and Zeke, on an obsessive fishing mission. Oblivious to vicious shark clouds looming above, they fiddle with equipment as their surroundings morph. A foxy mermaid swims by; corpses stretch graying hands above the pond's surface; and the water eventually turns to rabbits, but the two slumped characters remain focused.

Alan Soffer: All My Life's a Circle
Through June 3, Rosenfeld Gallery, 113 Arch St., 215-922-1376, www.therosenfeldgallery.com

Using encaustic on boards, Alan Soffer creates precise geometric paintings that are also textured, fluid and playful. In Circle and Squares, bright orbs creep up around a small cluster of teal squares. The rows of softly colored spheres in Dot I and Dot II are reminiscent of the sugary candy, while the planets and swirls of Microcosm IV are bold and intruding.

Scott White: An Exhibition of New Work
Through June 3, Airspace, 4013 Chestnut St., 215-694-9719

Scott White displays sketches, sculpture and charming inventions made during his time as the 40th Street artist-in-residence. Beepers at It Again, a pendulum-powered whistle machine, softy chirps and coos. Accordion, a re-imagined toy housed in elaborate carved-wood tubes, honks away. Bitchen Camaro, a softly curved porcelain sculpture mounted on wood, hangs quietly across the room.
