The Vermont dyad MV & EE (Matt Valentine and Erika Elder) open Green Blues (Ecstatic Peace!) by sparking up and throwing The Pretty Things on the stereo. But when they sing, "I inhaled a vortex last night," they're not just discussing their taste in smokables. There's a fundamental instability at the core of their music, where strangled blues and psychedelic fuzz smash and recombine like so many primordial atoms. Recorded with The Bummer Road, a mutable ensemble whose ranks include some of Valentine's former Tower Recordings compadres as well as a Mellotron-noodling J Mascis, Green Blues heaves up monster riffs and then repeats them until they start to dissolve, evaporating in a free-form haze. The center doesn't always hold, but when it does, the vortex inhales you.

Tue., June 12, 9 p.m., $8, with Greg Weeks, Ben + Vesper and Festival, Johnny Brenda's, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 215-739-9684, www.johnnybrendas.com.
