Most places in Philly are dripping with history — or at least want tourists to think they are. But few spots combine heritage and contemporary diversions quite like the New Angle Lounge at 39th and Lancaster.

Built in the 1800s, the building has a pleasant stone exterior, and, because of the sharp street corner, is triangular in shape (hence the name). Its unusual architecture, which led to its designation as part of the Powelton Village Historic District, lends to the interior's delightfully messy collection of weird angles that bend to fit in bathrooms and seating.
While the space ain't changing, New Angle's clientele has shifted over its 38 years of operation. "This bar [has gone] from all black to all white to all punk rock to a mixed crowd in my time here," says co-owner LaTanya Furman.
Nightly specials are similarly eclectic. On Wednesdays, purchasing a drink gets you a balloon with instructions inside. "Some tell you to buy someone a drink, do a jig, or put on a new song," says Furman. For extra credit, convince out-of-towners that drunken balloon bursting was first introduced by Benny Franklin.
