Summer is prime time for big local art shows, and the biggest of them all, "The Big Art Show," seems to have mastered the medium. This multimedia event combines the work of local and traveling artists with live entertainment by local and traveling bands, allowing some lesser-knowns to reach a broader audience. And unlike most shows, it's totally free for the artists, with no joining fee or commissions on the work they sell. This year's bands include Mossyrock, James Apollo, Collette Carter, Rob Mall and Wes Mattheu, who will share the gallery with artists Paul Yavarone, Rachel Ade, Dominica Paige, Eric Kennedy, Skullboy and many more. The show's organizers (based in and around Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey) have put on 50 successful events across the country in the past four years, and this one promises to be a another big, arty hit.

Sat., June 9, $5, 7 p.m., The Art Making Machine, 3000 N. Hope St., www.bigartshow.com, info@bigartshow.com.
