Culinary Mysteries Solved

Published: Jun 12, 2007

Q: I like taking my kids along when I go out, but children's menus always have the same choices — chicken fingers, spaghetti, cheeseburgers, etc. Aren't there any restaurants that offer something more interesting?

A: If the kids are craving taters but can't stomach another happy meal, test out the sweet potato fries at Bubble House (3404 Sansom St., 215-243-0804). Other unique options on their children's menu include crispy duck and pepperjack cheese samosas with mango soy sauce and tofu tempura served with jasmine rice. If the thought of a perfectly cooked medium-rare filet mignon makes your mouth water (and it does), bring the little ones along to Philly Crab and Steakhouse (3334 Grant Ave., 215-856-9510) where they can get their own petite filets. At New Ridge Diner (6750 Ridge Ave., 215-482-2401), kids' plates have cartoon-y names: Let them take a bite out of Mickey Mouse (a tuna sandwich) or Bugs Bunny (roast turkey with veggies). For the biggest selection of them all, head to The Pop Shop (729 Haddon Avenue, Collingswood, N.J., 856-869-0111) where the kids' menu is broken down into choices for "big squirts," "little squirts" and "baby squirts," all sized and priced accordingly. Order vegetarian corn dogs, English muffin pizzas or the breakfast sundae, a parfait layered with yogurt, Cheerios and berries.
