Summer Solstice Celebration Sat., June 23, 3 p.m.-Sun., June 24, 6 a.m., $5-$10, Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999, www.kimmelcenter.org
It's once again time for the plush Kimmel Center to open its doors for the annual Summer Solstice. This year, the around-the-clock shindig squeezes in more than two dozen performance art, music, dance and eclectic happenings — all for a very reasonable price. Spread out evenly among the various theaters and halls, there is guaranteed to be a little somethin' somethin' for everybody.
You could, for example, take in the triple soul songstress combo of taragirl, Carol Riddick and Lady Alma in Verizon Hall, then slide over to Commonwealth Plaza for Bob and Barbara's drag show, which will be followed by a drum circle and dancing until the break of dawn. The only dilemma is how to choose when two dope events coincide. Do you check out the pop-lockin' b-boy moves of the Rennie Harris Puremovement dance collective, or embarrass yourself singing karaoke to the tunes of Disney's High School Musical? Or perhaps you'd like to watch a mini fashion show and go speed dating?
Of course, you could always relax with a plate of barbecue from the Cadence Restaurant Terrace and let the on-site tarot card reader tell you how to spend the night. And, if all this decision-making should stress you out, sit down for a chair massage. With 15 hours of festivities to welcome in the summer, there's really no rush.
