Assembled by designer Lisa Roberts, this exhibit's stylish, fashion-forward furniture, stationery, jewelry and toys could well be tomorrow's collectibles. Repurposed as a clock, the Mona Lisa's classic smirk is interrupted by a ticking second hand. Pop-up books and Swatch watches warrant their own mini collections, and a plastic paperweight bearing the image of Hannibal also functions as a tape dispenser.
Combining functional light fixtures and abstract graphic design, Anonymous Artist (a shy fellow who also takes credit for the Lascaux cave paintings and the Book of Kells) creates bold, retro light boxes. The large, softly colored puzzle pieces of Zifta float together, emitting a warm glow. In the chaotic Gafden, neon stripes make a psychedelic checkerboard, echoing Zubaz and '80s music videos.
Chris Caccamise's sculpture and Jonas Wood's paintings are humorous takes on everyday scenes and objects. In Wood's Parent's Room, a picture of a whale hangs next to one of two chubby sunbathers, and Upstairs depicts fragments of hallways and rooms. Caccamise, meanwhile, uses paper, enamel and glue to perfectly re-create broken cassette tapes, a chunky digital watch and a dated, oversized cell phone.
