Jason Godeke: Headlines

Runs through June 30, Rodger La Pelle Galleries, 122 N. Third St., 215-592-0232

In Jason Godeke's playful yet disturbing paintings (pictured), cute playthings act out scandals in Dutch politics and culture. As a red sky looms overhead in Lawyer Nude with Girl, a glowing teddy bear stares down at a miniature child. In Theo van Gogh Murdered, worried-looking stuffed animals gather around the body of another teddy, stabbed and with red ribbon spilling from his chest.

Rob Raphael: Uomo

Though "Uomo" means "man" in Italian, Rob Raphael's installation — which combines men's suits and ceramic sculpture — is decidedly feminine. Huge swaths of pin-striped fabric are suspended by a coppery ribbon, then bunched and clipped to the wall by oversized clay brooches. The effect is at once elegant and dramatic.

This Is Not the Future
Runs through June 29, Vox Populi, 319 N. 11th St., third floor, 215-238-1236

Using photography, video, painting and mixed media, 23 artists offer unsettling, and somewhat mysterious, interpretations of the future. The deck of Preston Link's The Hot Ship sculpture is cluttered with disco balls, Mardi Gras beads, Christmas lights and other found objects. More than 8,000 hand-dyed cotton balls create an sinister, insectlike face in Will Pappenheimer's Versailles Monkey. Erica Eyres' mock documentary tells the story of Baby Marleena, a half-fish, half-human child who lives in a bathtub.
