Philly-based MC Lightborn is one of those scientific-type rappers who mixes philosophy into his rhymes, but you won't have to bust out a pocket Bible or dictionary to listen. On his second release, The Psychology of Fire (Eastlight), due out July 7, Lightborn examines the 1995 death of his stepfather and the city's current wave of violence and explores the idea of rebirth. To help him accomplish that, he reached out to a plethora of MCs, including heavies Killah Priest (Wu-Tang Clan) and Maylay Sparks, both known worldwide for their lyricism. "I want people to find their light and share it," says Lightborn. "That is what I tried to do with this release. It still has a street poetry element, but it is me reflecting on my own vision and experiences, and trying to be positive and honest." And Lord knows we need some of that 'round these parts.

Sat., July 7, 9 p.m., 21+, $10, with Rhythm Method, Grape Street Pub, 4100 Main St., 215-483-7084, www.grapestreet.com.
