Eva Ayllón

In her homeland, Peruvian singer Eva Ayllón, like the better known Susana Baca, is an established superstar, selling out megastadiums with ease. In the States (she lives in North Jersey), the 51-year-old Ayllón remains a word-of-mouth favorite, bringing her fiery voice to smaller venues like the acoustically pristine World Café. Singing what's known as "La Musica Negra" — the landó, the festejó, and the vals of indigenous, African and Spanish musical heritage — Ayllón's called "The Queen of Lando" in Peru for a reason: She's a diva in the best sense of the word.

Wed., July 11, 7:30 p.m., $36-$55, World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 215-222-1400, www.worldcafelive.com.

Lucero

Wes Frazer

Anyone who finds disfavor with the slick-Springsteen-sound infecting nu-pop's dippiest (hello, Killers) will adore the rough-hewn road darling-drama of Lucero and vocalist Ben Nichols. Straight outta punk Memphis with a brutish musicality that doesn't shy from shyness and gentility on stately ballads like "The Weight of Guilt" and "She Wakes When She Dreams," Lucero's newest, Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers could pass for the brashly beautiful follow-up to Bruce's 1978 Darkness on the Edge of Town.

Sat., July 7, 9 p.m. and Sun., July 8 at 8 p.m., North Star Bar, 27th and Poplar streets, 215-684-0808, www.northstarrocks.com.

Hip-hop/rock/pop
DJ Aktive & the Gentleman Crew

Skratch Makanik's DJ Aktive pairs up with guitarist Benanas and drummer Lawson (the Gentleman Crew) for a local party with a Hollywood vibe. Guests can take lessons from the DJ crew and slide over to the live photo shoot complete with a Cali superstar backdrop. Wow — people still do those, huh?

Fri., July 6, 9 p.m., 21+, e-mail for price, Mint, 50 S. Second St.,

Rock/pop/roots
O'Death

Rattling, shivering, clanging and staggering, New York's O'Death sound like a rusted old jalopy getting towed up and down the Appalachian Trail. Their spooky, asymmetrical take on roots music — mostly strummed and plucked strings, with occasional jubilant outbursts — make them a fine match for the headliners, City Paper models Man Man.

Tue., July 10, 7:30 p.m., $10, with Man Man and Deerhunter, Starlight Ballroom, 460 N. Ninth St., 866-468-7619, r5productions.com.

Jazz/rock/pop
Aunt Dracula/Abe Vigoda

Cali's Abe Vigoda make trippy no wave (on Animal Ghosts) that's as hangdog as their namesake when chasing Percosets with Strohs. Philly's Aunt Dracula? Their spook-house psych-folk has more bite than a whole bunch of hyped locals doing likewise.

Wed., July 11, 9 p.m., $8, with John Thill, Johnny Brenda's 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 866-468-7619, www.johnnybrendas.com.

rock/jazz
Tortoise

Yes, you just saw John McEntire in The Sea and Cake. No, they've got nothing new since The Brave and the Bold, and that doesn't count since it's them and Will Oldham covering Lungfish. Tortoise — still Kraut-chamber-rock's only child — don't need no stinking new record to celebrate their muted brutal beauty, their mellow frantically fractal math rock or their electro-blip-and-blur, speaker-creasing space-jazz featuring Hendrix-like explosions of guitar.

Fri., July 6, 7:30 p.m., $17-$20, with Notekillers, World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St., 215-222-1400, www.worldcafelive.com.
