In its third year of alternative pageantry at the Troc, Miss Catwalk Tragedy is once again stretching its inked and pierced wings across Philly. But don't be mistaken — this rockin' runway isn't exclusively for Goth girlies. "It's for anybody and everybody who considers themselves even slightly different from what is normal," says Joanna Marmon, organizer of the event and owner of Intrepid Jams.
Hitting the stage will be nonconformists of all shapes, sizes and piercings in evening wear, club clothes and swimsuits. A brand-new Betty Paige-inspired pinup round is only one of the tricks these ladies are hiding up their tattooed sleeves. However, the competition is just a small part of the evening. Participants and attendees can rub fishnet-covered elbows with judges such as fetish model Darenzia, Wicked Talent personality Cyndie Myst, photographer Kyle Cassidy and industrial icon Isaac Glendenning of Cesium 137. Suicide City, The Percocettes and Azoic will provide punky tunes while Philly's own Peek-A-Boo Revue (pictured) handles the burlesque.
So how do you snag the title of Miss Tragedy — and her prize package of photo shoots, cosmetics, concert tickets and other Gothic goodies? Pack an attitude as big as your patent-leather platforms. "Challenge the stereotypical mainstream ideal of what's beautiful," says Marmom. "And have a fun, silly, good time." Bring on the pleather pasties!
