Back in January, Brooklyn bassist Reuben Radding initiated the "12 in 2007" project, offering a free album-length download each month for the entire year. So far, the selections have included collaborations with Philly saxophonist Jack Wright, trumpeters Nate Wooley and Peter Evans, and vibraphonist Matt Moran. Radding seizes attention no matter who he's teamed with — no surprise given who's choosing the tracks, but I have yet to hear of an off night. April's edition is a particular highlight, featuring Radding alone (as he will be for tonight's show). By the time the opening 30-minute track ends, it has progressed from bowed tones that toll like bells, through violent scrapes and groans that sound like something's eating the bass, through nimble plucked figures and backxto dramatic, doom-laden bowing. Many players don't come up with this many ideas in a whole year, but Radding has six more equally compelling offerings up already, with five more promised. Mark your calendar.
Fri., July 13, 8 p.m., $5-10, with Evan Lipson/Gene Coleman, The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St., www.bowerbird.org.
