Star Trek has certainly lived long and prospered. Forty years after its debut, diehard fans come together and celebrate the sci-fi institution at the Salute to Star Trek Convention.
As with most Star Trek events, the convention includes plenty of fan-driven activities. Costume contests and a commemorative video showcase will honor the most dedicated Trekkies. "Conventions are opportunities for fans to throw themselves physically and spiritually into the worlds of Star Trek and science fiction," says George Takei, who played Sulu on the original series and will make a guest appearance. In addition to Takei, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and other alumni will speak about their memories and the series' legacy.
However, the day is not merely for those fluent in Klingon. Takei urges everyone to boldly go, even if they've never gone before. "It's a truly singular experience," he says. "Virginal attendees are treated very nicely."
