Old-school bingo is fine for grandma, but your card could use an update. Putting an indie-rock twist on the senior center game of choice, Philly native and self-proclaimed bingo junkie Courtney Bennett makes the traditional chips hip.
Instead of the usual numbers and letters, Bennett's cards use imagery such as college radio logos, mix tapes, notebooks and cardigans. While the focus is mostly on early '90s twee and indie-pop, an Apple laptop icon nods to current trends. Prizes include gift certificates to local stores, vinyl, CDs and candy — because, according to Bennett, "People like winning candy." After the games, DJs Laris Kreslins, Kyle Andrews and Mon Lu Cont have the obligatory dance party covered.
In true indie-rock style, expect a healthy dose of thinly veiled snobbery. "Mostly, the night is an excuse for me to make all the bad indie rock puns I want to without being an elitist asshole," says Bennett. "If anyone really feels like I talk about too many bands they've never heard of, I'll make them a mix tape."
