Culinary Mysteries Solved

Published: Jul 18, 2007

Q: After a few years in NYC, I got used to finding food at all hours of the night. Here, I always end up at Lorenzo's after last call. What else is open late?

A: Skip the pizza crowd and jump across the street to Maoz (248 South St., 215-625-3500) for falafel with as many free fixins as you can handle. There will be definitely be a line once the bars let out, but 13th Street Pizza (209 S. 13th St., 215-546-4453) is usually good for a quick slice, plus chicken, eggplant or meatball parm sandwiches. Penn students gravitate toward The Greek Lady (222 S. 40th St., 215-382-2600), which is open till 3 a.m. during the school year; choose from steaks, hoagies, wraps and specialties like souvlaki and gyros. Plenty of diners are open 24 hours; Little Pete's (219 S. 17th St., 215-545-5508), however, also features 24-hour delivery, so you can sober up with an omelette in the comfort of your own home. Chinese is usually a safe bet, too: Try the Temple Star (1412 W. Diamond St., 215-236-8990) until 4 a.m. on weekends, or Choy Wong (708 S. 50th St., 215-476-9645), which offers a sizable list of vegan-friendly dishes. And you can always just move the debauchery to a bar that offers cheap late-night bites: Mad Mex (3401 Walnut St., 215-382-2221) offers most of its menu, including burritos, quesadillas and appetizers, at half-price from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.
