Two local artists are aiming to stimulate your eyes, ears and brain with "Invisible/Invincible," a two-pronged interactive installation empowered by a grant from the Leeway Foundation. In "Women of a Certain Age," visual artist Linda Dubin Garfield provides various media — crayons, papers, glue sticks, ribbons, etc. — and encourages visitors to create self-portraits to hang on the walls. The exercise, inspired by a need to shine a light on people deemed invisible in society, is open to men and women of all ages. "Creating together builds community for the small group," says Garfield. "And people share and experience a moment with strangers that might not [otherwise] ever have met."
Performance artist Susan DiPronio will provide the soundtrack in the form of her precocious brainchild "screams." Visitors can pick up a CD player and listen to stories told by the disenfranchised. Afterward, they can record their own entries into the "Invisible/Invincible" project, which has been popping around town since Fringe last year.
"To finally be able to tell your story to the world is a very cathartic experience," says DiPronio. "It is wonderful to journal your thoughts, but the next level of performing/recording is very powerful. And the next step of having the world finally listen is truly emotionally groundbreaking for those involved."
