Stephen L. Carter's New England White is much more than a run-of-the-mill political thriller, offering, for a change, transparent prose and a complicated protagonist, and — finally, in a work that dwells a great deal on race — surprisingly little that is black-and-white. Given that, along with the fact that Carter is a professor at Yale Law School whose nonfiction titles include Integrity, Civility, Reflections of an Affirmative Action Baby and God's Name in Vain, and that he's one of our most prolific thinkers on some of the thorniest cultural issues in the United States today, his appearance at the Free Library on Thursday promises to be much more than a run-of-the-mill literary event.

Thu., July 26, 7 p.m., free, Free Library, Central Branch, 1901 Vine St., 215-567-4341, www.library.phila.gov.
