Culinary Mysteries Solved

Published: Aug 7, 2007

Q: I spent a semester abroad in England. Now that I'm back in Philly, I really, really miss British sweets.

A: Our favorite place to find British candy is Empire Food (746 South St., 215-923-5946). This tiny store carries brands like Nestle Aero Bars, Galaxy Minstrels and several different types of Cadbury's, including Flake bars. You can also find McVities Digestives in plain and milk chocolate and a small selection of assorted British food products. VIP Food and Produce (1314 Walnut St., 215-735-1977) has a good selection of international foods — on a recent visit, we found a few types of Cadbury's, plus what looked like a French version of Jaffa Cakes, spongy treats dotted with orange fruit jelly and covered in chocolate (they've carried the English version in the past). But if you want the best selection, your best bet is visiting BritishGoodsOnline.com, an importer that's based right outside Harrisburg. Here, you'll find pretty much everything from chocolate to biscuits to Heinz microwavable Chocolate Sponge Pudding (who doesn't love cake in a can?), plus loads of other edible nostalgia. In the end, if you still can't find what you're looking for, head to your local pub and order a few Strongbows — pretty soon, you'll forget you wanted chocolate in the first place.
