Fringe is back and even bigger. Now in its 11th year, the fest is bringing in singers, dancers, actors and artists from Argentina, Bulgaria, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Vietnam and every corner of the U.S. for two weeks of performances. In order to keep this international party running smoothly, volunteers are needed to serve as ushers, box office staff, house managers, security and more. Volunteers should have an interest in the performing arts, and free tickets and T-shirts will reward the artsy efforts. Call 215-413-1270, e-mail volunteer@livearts-fringe.org or visit www.livearts-fringe.org for more info.

Writing skills can take you a long way. Spread the word to fifth-graders from the KIPP Charter School in North Philadelphia and help the budding Hemingways write and revise poems, letters and speeches and get excited about different types of writing. Volunteers will work with students either in small groups or one on one. No fancy degree or published clips necessary — just patience and a positive attitude. Call Trina Averett at 267-978-3340 or e-mail trina_028@hotmail.com for more info.

Northern Home for Children, an organization that provides support for children who exhibit behavioral problems and their families, also has a program for young mothers in need. Grab a spatula and help cook with these women eager to learn about healthy recipes and good nutrition practices for their children. Can't even make a proper slice of toast? Volunteers are also needed to baby-sit while the moms are in the kitchen. Call Kathy Kennedy at 215-848-2944, e-mail kkpw@comcast.net or visit www.northernhome.org for more info.
Through Sept. 16
This theater program provides year-round performance opportunities for teens and young adults with physical disabilities. As they prepare for their September performance of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown at St. Joe's, volunteers are needed to assist with memorization, singing and dancing. Theater experience doesn't hurt, but only a willingness to help is necessary. Call Kathleen Cloran at 610-581-7100 or visit www.christinerouse.com for more info.

The organization formerly known as the Philadelphia Print Collaborative is dedicated to promoting printmaking (think screen print, lithography, intalgio and relief work) in Philly's contemporary art community. Volunteers are needed for office assistance and project and event-specific work. In exchange for time, they make valuable contacts in the arts scene. E-mail info@philagrafika.org or visit www.philagrafika.org for more info.
