Rest assured that the fine folks at Kildare's will be serving more than just a Magic Hat liquid diet at this four-course beer dinner. As you're downing Circus Boy Hefeweizen, No. 9, Fat Angel and other choices from the infamous Vermont-based brewery, be sure to save room for the seafood extravaganza (baked salmon stuffed with crabmeat) and maple cheesecake. This here event is as serious about drinking as my Irish grandfather is about ... drinking: The final course is a cup of spiked coffee. Kildare's Pub, 826 Dekalb Pike, King of Prussia, 610-337-4772.
Food makes history lessons so much easier to digest. In Week One of local personal chef Karen Docimo's four classes centered around the cuisines of Italy, you'll learn about the goat- and sheep-herding culture of the southern region of Calabria that made cheese such an integral part of the area's lifeblood. Muse on the geographical, cultural and edible history of southern Italy as instructor Docimo teaches you how to cook pork, eggplant and Orient-inspired dessert dishes, a byproduct of the region's diverse cultural history. Kitchen Kapers, 1341 Nixon Drive, Moorestown, N.J., 856-778-7705.
Wine creates a loopy, whimsical type of intoxication that seems inherently linked to music and hanging in dark, cavernous places. Throughout this three-day weekend, Chaddsford Winery's own Eric and Lee Miller will lead all you jazz-loving wine-heads around their vineyard and then duck into the cellar for some tastings. Outside, acts like the Budesa Brothers and Chris Farr will perform as Pace One Restaurant serves up BBQ treats. Chaddsford Winery, 632 Baltimore Pike, Chaddsford, 610-388-6221.
Crustaceans served in cities that aren't adjacent to bodies of water with seafoody reputations tend to freak us out a little bit (sorry, Schuylkill). But grilled-to-order shrimp, paired with succulent petit filet mignon, potato purée and a wild mushroom salsa, certainly seem legit — especially if it's all being served as a $20 special at the Moshulu's seasonal Bongo Bar & Deck. The restaurant's other under-$20 specials include ahi tuna tacos and lump crab cakes served with fried green tomatoes, a corn purée and smoked chili cream. Close your eyes, take a bite and pretend you're on the Chesapeake. Penn's Landing Marina, 401 S. Columbus Blvd., 215-923-2500.
Since we all know fall in Pennsylvania lasts for two weeks, it's time to enjoy summery drinks and grub before seasonal depression sets in. Gypsy Saloon's "5 at 5" menu is sort of like the McDonald's dollar menu, except you order stuff like panko-crusted crab cakes for five bucks instead of the Filet-O-Fish for one. Sounds relatively fair to us. Other items available via the weekday happy hour deal include chicken, grilled corn and cream cheese egg rolls and pomegranate vodka Pearl-Tinis. Gypsy Saloon, 128 Ford St., W. Conshohocken, 610-828-8494.
