Inliquid knows how to throw a party. For the past six years, the visual artists and designers collective has been skipping the wine-and-cheese affair for full-blown benefit bashes. Its seventh annual silent auction will feature more artwork than ever, with 230 pieces from both members and non-member artists.
The auction's works cover all genres and media, from abstract landscapes and Picasso-like portraits of city dwellers to recycled lamps and jewelry made of hardware or Dominoes. Artists such as Randall Cleaver, who constructed a clock from a Kikkoman soy sauce can, are inspired by the everyday; Josephine Alcott channels the faraway and exotic for her nontraditional landscapes based on regions in Granada, Spain and Morocco. Other artists include Leslie Atik, Daniel A. Heyman, Cathleen Hughes, Rob Kirsh, Tsuyoshi Ito and Jody Sweitzer. Additionally, there will be more than 100 items donated by boutiques, galleries and performing arts centers, including Lost + Found, Falling Cow Gallery, the Print Center, the Wilma Theater and the Kimmel Center. Proceeds will benefit Inliquid, a nonprofit, as well as the Abigail Rebecca Cohen Foundation, which provides urban youth with art education and honors the memory of Abigail Cohen, who co-founded the first Inliquid auction with Rachel Zimmerman.
Of course, there's more to the evening than art. Tickets include food and cocktails donated by local restaurants, and Philly's fave burlesque ladies, Peek-A-Boo Revue, are scheduled to perform. "We want to count on the fact that people know it's a really good party," says Joan Smith, Inliquid's associate director.
