When Steve Miller began building ramps at Whitehall Skate Park, he didn't realize he was creating a safe haven for children in the neighboring community of Frankford. "This park keeps a lot of kids out of trouble," said Miller, owner of Exit Philadelphia skate shop. The Whitehall Skate Park Jam will raise money for new ramps, ledges and a much-needed makeover. Throughout the day, skateboarders can compete for various prizes in best-trick competitions. Food and drinks will be provided by Mountain Dew, and the Exit team will be showing off their moves.
In addition to fundraising, the day is also about awareness for the community park. All of the courses and ramps are open to the public, and anyone can contribute time, materials and manpower to enhance the space. The park's lights stay on until 11 p.m. every night, creating a welcome oasis in a struggling neighborhood and a city that often views skateboarders as criminals. "It's a place kids can go and know they're welcome to skateboard," says Miller.
