Glassblowing isn't for everyone, what with the fire and molten glass. Experiencing it as a spectator, however, is all the fun without the risk of singed eyebrows. The Female Flame-Off gathers 30 of the world's most talented female glassblowers to compete and show off their work.
Each woman will have two hours of torch time, and the work will be judged by a panel including glass artist Debra Carlton. Categories include marbles, functional, sculpture and wearables. Joining the ladies for a live demo will be renowned Italian glassblower Lucio Bubacco. The weekend will conclude with public live and silent auctions, the proceeds of which will benefit the Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network (RAINN).
Jessica Mucci, a gallery assistant at Philadelphia Glass Works, hopes the city will be drawn to the flame. Although this is the Flame-Off's second year, it's swinging through Philly for the first time. "We're expecting a lot of people from the glass community, which is wonderful, but we're really hoping people from the community come and take an interest in glassblowing," she says. "It's something truly amazing to watch."
