It's a hello-and-goodbye fall season opener for Pennsylvania Ballet. Hello to a season highlighted by a long overdue new Nutcracker production. A fond goodbye to Matthew Neenan, whose 13-year PAB career ends with his performance as the Bugle Boy in modern dance great Paul Taylor's Company B — a dance homage to the World War II era using Andrews Sister music. "It's full circle for me because Bugle Boy was my first principal role with the company," says Neenan. "I had sort of hoped to escape without anyone noticing. But as it turns out, even though I am not a sentimental person, I do feel this is special. It's also that I like the role because it's physically challenging with lots of difficult jumps."
Neenan's As It's Going, a ballet in seven movements to complex Shostakovich music, shifts the mood, while reminding everyone his choreographic talent will remain in-house even if he's performing solely with his BalletX. George Balanchine's Concerto Barocco, the first ballet performed by Pennsylvania Ballet, rounds out the program. It's traditional for PAB to give a nod to Balanchine on its season opener because it was with Balanchine's blessing that PAB came into existence.
Oct. 10-13, 8 p.m.; Oct. 13-14, 2 p.m., Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St., 215-551-7000, www.paballet.org.
