Culinary Mysteries Solved

Q: Now that the weather is turning cool, where you can still sit outside without freezing to death?

A: Considering the sheer volume of sidewalk cafés in Philly, it's funny that more places don't cater to fall outdoor dining whims. Here are a few establishments that have taken to roasting guests with heat lamps and/or radiant heating systems. In Rittenhouse, try standbys like the old original Rouge (205 S. 18th St., 215- 732-6622) and Twenty Manning (261 S. 20th St., 215-731-0900). You've also got Brasserie Perrier (1619 Walnut St., 215-568-3000) a few blocks away. In Old City, the Plough & the Stars (123 Chestnut St., 215-733-0300) drags out the towering heat lamps once the foliage starts to change. Scantily clad servers congregate near the heat lamps at Washington Square (210 W. Washington Square, 215-592-7787). If you want to bring your own booze as a warm-me-up, try Mercato (1216 Spruce St., 215-985-2962). Though the Irish are generally blasé toward winter chill, the folks at Yello'bar (2425 Grays Ferry Ave., 215-735-3533) will provide heat their beer garden in the coming months. Get toasty at Liberties Walk with visits to Bar Ferdinand (1030 N. Second St., 215-923-1313) and Deuce (1040 N. Second St., 215-413-3822). Last but not least, New Deck Tavern (3408 Sansom St., 215-386-4600) will keep you warm in the west.
