Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is one of a handful of dance companies that regularly appear in Annenberg's Dance Celebration series, and for good reason. The high-spirited modern troupe puts on a great show that consistently fills up the auditorium. Annenberg audiences have a big onstage surprise coming when HSDC opens Dance Celebration's season this year; Pennsylvania Ballet dancer Phillip Colluci makes his local première dancing as an HSDC company member. Yes! This tour-de-force mover and greatly admired PAB favorite left Pennsylvania Ballet last May and signed on full time with the Chicago modern dancers. Since HSDC is known for its high-flying and take-no-prisoners movement attack, Colluci who personifies these qualities undoubtedly found his true performing home. Still, he slipped away too quietly and we're happy to have a chance to celebrate him a bit. It'll be great having him back onstage locally. Colucci and the other excellent HSDC dancers perform American Twyla Tharp's "Baker's Dozen" using Willie "the Lion" Smith's piano sounds, plus two dances created by HSDC members artistic director Jim Vincent and dancer Alejandro Cerrudo and a contribution from hot Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin.
