Hooray for Clancy Newman. This upstate New York native is one of the most acclaimed young cellists out there, and for his Philadelphia Chamber Music Society recital he might have been expected to pull out some chestnuts of the repertoire, a Beethoven sonata maybe, or perhaps the increasingly popular Rachmaninoff sonata. Instead, we get an amazingly daring program of masterpieces of the recent past, plus two new works. The "older" music is by Ligeti, Shostakovich and the grand old man of American music, Elliott Carter, who is still a productive composer in his ninth decade on Earth. This is a lively, exciting and uniquely involving bunch of pieces. The new stuff includes a work recently premièred by Newman and his regular partner, pianist Noreen Cassidy-Polera from West Coast composer Kenji Bunch, and the local première of a variation set by one Clancy Newman.
