No wonder BalletX co-artistic director Christine Cox exclaims "Great!" when describing how the small troupe feels about its upcoming inaugural season as Wilma Theater's resident dance company. The Xperimenters will offer three sets of performances at the Wilma a year (in November, March and July), giving the talented crew a huge opportunity to develop their company, create work and establish an audience. "It's exciting, it's affirming and it feels like we are growing up," says Cox.
Three world premières mark the occasion. Cox debuts M.O.M. (My Own Memory),which was inspired "by feelings about my mom and aging" and which uses Evelyn Glennie music sung by Björk. Matthew Neenan, BalletX's other founding artistic director, premières Once Again. He continues exploring his choreographic fascination with contradictions. His contemporary movements will unfold to baroque music, but he'll turn around and set his more classical moves to the Beatles. Guest Adam Hougland fills out the evening with Risk of Flight, performed to Zoe Keating's experimental cello music. Neenan met Hougland when he was working with Ballet Pacifica six years ago. Their aesthetic viewpoints meshed, they stayed in touch and here's the result.
