"A lot of artists fall away before they even get to be what we call 'emerging,'" says Theresa Shockley, executive director of the Community Education Center, who notes that many aspiring creative souls "want to pursue their art, but then they see there's no money and nobody's really presenting artists in that stage of development. So they have to self-produce to be seen." Or, they might score a spot on the CEC's New Edge Mix, a series designed for up-and-comers as well as artists who are looking to try something different with their art than they've done in the past. Many now-well-known local performers, dancers especially, have gotten a career boost due to participation in the Mix. The upcoming roster features several promising prospects, including Melissa Chisena, who's performed with Tania Isaac Dance and PIMA Group; and Molly Root, who's worked with Group Motion and Brian Sanders JUNK. Both present original choreography here. Meanwhile, Louis DeVaughn Nelson (aka DeVo), a multidisciplinary artist who choreographs for Peek-A-Boo Revue (among many other things); Afua Hall, formerly with Philadanco; and musician/poetess Karen Moore-Williams all have more experience making their own work, but here, each experiments with new ideas.
