Members of Maryland hip-hop collective The Low Budget Crew have strong ties to the Philly circuit, or Jazzy Jeff at least. Jeff mixed Oddisee's full-length album late last year, and Kev Brown (pictured) served time with the illustrious A Touch of Jazz production crew. And both guested on Jazzy's 2002 album The Magnificent. Brown's also known as the brainchild behind The Brown Album, a 2004 remix project spawned from Jay-Z's The Black Album. Kev, Oddisee and MC Kenn Starr will be sliding through Philly tomorrow at King Ranks' boom-box showcase, which aims to put local and national underground acts on the same stage. Representing Philly will be MC State Store (a Chief Kamachi affiliate), performing some of his newly recorded solo material. Asked what the crowd can expect, Oddisee bluntly says, "An old-fashioned hip-hop show where you listen, dance and enjoy music without ego and fear of being shot or stabbed." Sounds good to me.
Fri., Nov. 23, 9 p.m., $10, with Low Budget Crew, State Store, Liquid Charm, 1207 Race St., 215-557-0208, myspace.com/boomboxmovement.
