Katrina Ford's caterwaul is the biggest and easiest thing to grab onto when you're hit with the wave of sound her band, Celebration, puts out. However tightly you manage to hold on, though, it's hard to pull more than phrases from her lyrics: It's much easier to surrender to that voice, never mind what it's saying. Complex and layered and texturally rich, Celebration play like they're afraid of silence, and so come out with a near-desperate superabundance of noise and theatricality. In fact, the Baltimore band, which formed out of the ashes of the carnivalesque Love Life, releases their records on 4AD and while that label might be past its glory days, Celebration has breathed in its atmosphere, turning in an overstuffed, frantic version of the Watts-Russell sound. Touring behind their standout sophomore LP, The Modern Tribe, the live band may well lack the guest spots that pepper the record. The core, though — drummer David Bergander, Ford and her multi-instrumentalist husband, Sean Antanaitis — hardly needs help to overwhelm one small Northern Liberties bar with sound.
