Brian Sload has an unusual addiction. "If I'm not doing flips or spinning on my head, I'm not happy," says the creator of Extreme Kicks, an organization dedicated to promoting and teaching breakdancing and martial arts. With Kings of the Floor, a multi-round breaking competition, Sload hopes to create "the X-games for hip-hop." Battle one of nine will pit 16 crews against one another to see who has the finest skills in Philly. The evening, in which dancers will face off in an open circle, also features live spins from DJ Ill-Literate. The winning troupe will move on to the finals to compete for a $3,000 prize.
If all goes as Sload hopes, Kings of the Floor will give breakdancing the exposure it deserves. "Breakdancing has evolved so much over the years," he says. "It died out for a little in 2000, but it's coming back fresh. The style is so much more sophisticated."
