Christmas Cartoon Trio
Fri., Nov. 30, 5-7 p.m., free
If A Charlie Brown Christmas gets you in the mood to buy a sad, skinny Christmas tree and pine after a little red-haired girl, get ye to West Chester's Iron Hill Brewery. The Christmas Cartoon Trio — also known as local musicians Rob Swanson (bass), Jackie Browne (drums) and Jeff Knoettner (piano) — will be kicking off the season with their note-for-note performance of the jazzy, Vince Guaraldi-composed soundtrack to the beloved cartoon. Sip a pint and show everyone how hard you worked on your Snoopy dance. Iron Hill Brewery, 3 W. Gay St., West Chester, ironhillbrewery.com.
Thu., Nov. 29, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., free
Ten semifinalists in this cooking contest (sponsored by the venerable kosher foodstuffs company) will whip up dishes live for a shot at a $25,000 prize and a trip to New York City for the finals. The contestants, eight of whom are from the Philadelphia area, will cook up dishes ranging from herb-crusted rack of lamb with apricot salsa to falafel pizza and baked honey-pecan chicken. Everyone who attends receives a complimentary kosher lunch — just like Bubbe's house. Hilton Doubletree Hotel, 237 S. Broad St., manischewitz.com.
Tue., Dec. 4, 6 and 8:30 p.m., $90
Little Fish chef/owner Mike Stollenwerk likes cheeks. Cured pig cheeks and fresh halibut cheeks are just so sweet and tasty. But anything good can be made great with the seasonal black truffle, that pricey nugget of gourmet epicurean fantasy. Two seatings give the normal peasant a chance at truffle-oil poached veal tenderloin and even a truffle ice cream. Bring your own wine — it's one of the few things that'd be difficult to improve upon via tuber. Little Fish, 600 Catherine St., 215-413-3464, littlefishphilly.com.
Thu., Dec. 6, 6-8 p.m., $45
Ever wonder who that smiling face is on the Rogue Chocolate Stout bottle? It's Sebbie Buhler, Rogue's East Coast rep, and pairing beer and cheese is one of her passions. Meet Sebbie and sample the brewery's Shakespeare Stout, Russian Imperial Stout and Monk Madness paired up with DiBruno's international cheeses. DiBruno Bros., 1730 Chestnut St., 215-665-1659, dibruno.com.
Tue., Dec. 4-Tue., Dec. 11, 5:30-10 p.m., $20 (add $18 for wine flight)
In honor of the eight nights of Hanukkah, Ansill will pair a four-course dinner with eight special wines. Savor raw oysters with Prosecco and Riesling or crispy lamb's tongue with Shiraz and Negroamaro. Let's hope the oil burns long enough to snag some violet ice cream topped with candied violets for dessert. Ansill, 627 S. Third St., 215-627-2485, ansillfoodandwine.com.
