It's not easy to fit all that is West Philly under one roof, but Denice "Vitamin D" Witkowski is trying. For the past eight years, the local promoter and director of Vitamin D Productions has been bringing the area's artists, residents and students to the Rotunda for free music, art and positive energy at the World Peace Festival.
"Everybody enjoys listening and feeling the rhythm," says Witkowski. "It gives people a peaceful feeling inside." This year's fest features a diverse lineup ranging from Alokli, a West African percussive dance group, to the medieval sounds of the Oubliette Ensemble. Other acts include the 15-member West Philly Orchestra and reggae band Crucial. Additionally, local businesses and crafters are invited to sell their food, handmade items and other goods without paying a vendor fee.
According to Witkowski, the Rotunda is the natural venue for the day. "Their idea was to branch the West Philly community with the Penn students," she says. "That was their mission, it was my mission, so we joined together. Bring your love vibe and your energy out so that everybody can feel love in the room."
