When commissioning Xmas Philes back in 2000, Joan Myers Brown hoped that her company, Philadanco, was creating something that would last. The gambit paid off big-time: This highly entertaining holiday piece, created by choreographer Danny Ezralow, has become a gift that keeps on giving. It continues to garner crowds who enjoy Xmas Philes' sundry melodramatic segments that put the company's dancers through a host of paces to include the mambo, a kickin' chorus line and neo-classical ballet. And though it has serious moments, this one is ultimately a joyous romp. That's the main draw, but two other works on the bill also offer imaginative dancemanship. Elisa Monte's Light Lies Beyond is inspired by color theorist Josef Albers, and much like the artist, it plays upon the "sensualization and vibration of color." Featuring dramatic lighting, it's a fine feast for the eyes. Meanwhile, Milton Myers' Violin Concerto has company members gamely articulating the shifting moods of a soundscape by Philip Glass.
