For the past 35 years, the Community Education Center has been providing Powelton Village with classes and workshops in everything from flamenco to kendo to hip-hop. Not surprisingly, that kind of programming can rack up some bills. In order to continue its mission to bring low-cost cultural activities to West Philly, the resource center and meeting space is throwing Show Some Love, a dance party fundraiser. Guests will have a chance to mingle with the many artists who teach and perform at the center, and music will be taken care of by DJ Mr. Cisum.
Recently, the CEC has lost some of its key sources of funding. Although the city provides a substantial amount of money for building renovations, none is dedicated to performances and events. "This is one of the best cities to be in, in terms of foundation support," says Executive Director Theresa Shockley. "It's still a very difficult situation."
