Author Roddy Doyle enjoys checking in on old characters, but you don't need to have read (or seen) The Commitments to enjoy their title story from his new short story collection, The Deportees (Viking Adult, $24.95). Though, if you have, you'll be happy to know Jimmy Rabbitte is still the biggest music nerd outside a Hornby novel. You'll also be happy to know Doyle's still swinging away in his wheelhouse, examining the moody lives and times of his colorful Londoners. As always, his episodic style — just about every story is divided into chapters, every couple of pages — keeps things moving swiftly, and his gentle humor pervades. In other words, Doyle himself is a character worth checking in on.
