Using found objects, paper and fabric, 32 artists created toys and games that comment on social and political issues. Karen Stone's The Long Haul is a caravan of caged Troll dolls, Disney figures and plastic animals drawn by a large duck, pointing to the commercialization of childhood. Meanwhile, Drew Zimmerman's three-dimensional model of City Hall doubles as a ring toss.
Local artist David Aronson filled Germ with angels, demons, bones and seashells in celebration of mythology and psychology. His oil paintings, mixed media and graphite on paper depict a barrage of wacky situations, including a wasplike creature impregnating a woman with a lizard's head, a boldly colored lion-man under a rippling sun and a woman in a deep lip-lock with a skull.
Armond Scavo is renowned for capturing Philly — whether whited out by a blizzard or lit up at night by Rittenhouse Square's Christmas decorations (pictured). Dating back to 1969, this collection of his photographs shows quiet scenes removed from the hustle and bustle of urban life. See Franklin Roosevelt Park, the city's skyline and a solitary figure standing on the corner with an umbrella, barely visible through the fog.
