It may seem like a counter-intuitive notion, but percussion ensembles are capable of producing some of the most delicate and complex sounds possible. It helps to accept a very broad definition of percussion namely, almost anything that will make a sound when whacked. In the case of the group So Percussion, a quartet of Yale-trained musicians, this might include flowerpots and plumbing. Of course, percussion ensembles can also make a hell of racket. What fun would they be if they didn't? Not surprisingly, this format of rich possibility has attracted a bunch of new music types, including Steve Reich, who trained as a percussionist before concentrating on composition. His music will be featured in So Percussion's concert, which is being presented as part of the invigorating Fresh Ink series at Kimmel. The group will also perform work by Bang on a Can co-founder David Lang.
Sat., Feb. 2, 7:30 p.m., $26-$37, Perelman Theater, 300 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999, kimmelcenter.org.
