Brini Maxwell has become a kind of go-to gal for the retro chic. First a TV show, then a book, and now the fictional character (played by real-life guy Ben Sander, a Fashion Institute of Technology grad) has launched a line of products inspired by the golden age of 1950s and '60s design. During her Sunday afternoon trunk show, the domestic drag diva will showcase two new lines of pillows.
"They evoke the style of Hollywood regency," says Maxwell of one collection, which features elaborate custom tassels, patent leather and suede appliqué. The second series is inspired by pop art and iconic images such as the VW Bug and rotary telephones, of which Maxwell herself is an avid collector. "Things that were utilitarian and ubiquitous become doubly fascinating when they become obsolete because they were such a part of our lives," she says in her characteristic Carol Brady tone. Other Brini Maxwell goods include color-coordinated napkins, dish towels and aprons, and the line will soon expand with T-shirts, stationery, lighting and furniture.
In her own nest, Maxwell is quite proud of her collection of tabletop appliances, including the Baconer, a kitschy bacon toaster manufactured by Hamilton Beach in the early 1970s. "It's a practical product," she coos. "It's just perfect for brunch."
