Using a technique called "Verre Eglomise," or glass gilding and reverse painting on glass, Suzanne Reese Horvitz layers silk screen prints, photographs, digital images and boldly colored paints onto the back sides of glass panels (pictured). From the front, the pieces look almost three-dimensional, with mythical figures such as mermaids, fairies and conjoined twins seeming to leap from the surface.
This heartwarming memorial show features works by the late Marge Peterson, a longtime Highwire Gallery member who died in 2007. Peterson painted primarily with oil on canvas, using large geometric shapes and blended tones. Our favorite: Lady in Pink, an abstract portrait of a woman with a long neck and gray hair covering one eye, posing in front of hideously colored floral wallpaper. Alongside her pieces are paintings and sculpture by other gallery members, created in celebration of her energy and playfulness.
