The Philly Classics

The Music Issue

Published: Mar 4, 2008

Seems like every music issue we go out looking for those promising young rookies, but how many don't end up lasting the year? Actually, none — we know how to pick 'em. But still. It's high time we paid respect to the artists who've paid their dues — the lifers, the veterans, the classics in our midst we ought not to take for granted.

For starters, we got chatted up by Jonathan Sternberg, the worldly and charming Bach Festival conductor (whom our fact checker now has a crush on). That's p. 22-23. • Then we've got Phil Roy, signed and ready to start playing other people's kitchens. P. 26. • See the cover? That's Lady B, legendary hip-hop radio DJ. P. 29. • Philly's current freak-folkies oughta be carving Linda Cohen's name in their desks. P. 30. • Bebop saxman Bootsie Barnes is still kicking ass at age 70. Awesome story. P. 32-33. • Where would we be without a bonafide comeback story? DJ Too Tuff is out of the slammer and ready to let it rip. P. 34. • Finally, on p. 35, we ditch the whole old-head thing for the Philly Rock Shootout. It's another one of those online voting madness things — except this time Philly bands are drafted as unwitting soldiers in a war between City Paper and Y-Rock. It's not just bragging rights at stake. Help us defeat those XPN-leeching, Hives-humping internerds in this epic battle. It should be one for the ages.
