Remarkably gifted author Sherman Alexie once said that the greatest threat to the American Indian is middle class white women who are obsessed with "Native Spirituality." So, while it's tempting to remind oneself while listening to Prophecy 2 (Valley Entertainment) that this CD is most likely to be purchased in a New Age bookstore, along with a "spirit-catcher," by the Desperate Housewives of Orange County, it's important to remember that you should never judge a genre of music by the people who consume it: Otherwise, jazz would be irrelevant just because most jazz enthusiasts are exactly as they were portrayed by Steve Buscemi in Ghost World, and not for the simple reason that all jazz music is lame.
Unfortunately, after a promising little intro, Prophecy 2 — not to be confused with the film Prophecy II, which Christopher Walken, Jennifer Beals, Brittany Murphy and Eric Roberts all wisely dropped from their résumés — turns out to be exactly what we feared it would be: a New-Agey mishmash of chants and native flute layered atop wispy synth pads, cheesy guitar licks, bird chirps and honky-tonk piano. With the exception of Johnny Whitehorse's "Iron Horse" and Mary Youngblood's "Silent Wolf," this entire CD is about as enjoyable as having your teeth cleaned by a blind dentist. I defy any of you to go through the entirety of the liner notes (which helpfully inform us about the return of Pahana, the "lost White Brother from the stars") without screaming in pain.
Great Spirit-fuckin'-dammit, this CD makes me want to kill white people! Isn't it bad enough that we pushed the American Indians to the edges of their own lands — and engaged in 500 years of the sort of genocidal behavior that makes Ghengis Khan look like Chaka Khan — without having to shove their music between two slices of white bread and selling back to them as a shit sandwich?

Invade your local New Age bookstore and demand that they knock this crap the fuck off, right now. "Lost White Brother from the stars" my ass.

anyone who sees the way of living in balance with the land is mimicking native american spirituality?
you must live in a big city and only walk in beauty in your imagination to say such things.
i dont care about what you have to say about a CD, you can have your opinon, go back to your apartment and watch nature on televion.
Since I WROTE that column instead of passing it along orally to the other members of the Wiseass Nation, it's not my mouth but my Editor, Chief Red Pen, whom I need to safeguard myself from.
My anger is with what I see as the cheapening of Native American culture (and with the STARZ channel for pulling their dirty movies from the ON Demand menu). Most people who see "the way of living in balance with the land" are not mimicking Native American spirituality: unless, of course, they have blonde hair, blue eyes, have changed their name form Sheila Henderson to "Squatting Cloud", and have given away their trust funds to a "Medicine Man" who looks remarkably like Jimmy Kimmel. Oh and in my imagination, I'm walking through Amsterdam.
Thanks for the suggestion that I watch "nature" on the TV in my apartment (please see my complaint about STARZ, above); however I currently reside in a large, lavishly furnished house with Ms. Keira Knightley.
Thanks and keep writing,

PS. "Lost White Brother from the stars" my ass.
Go turn on Starz and jack off to Hyapatia Lee.
Secretary of State: They're... what they use to make Brawndo!
Pvt. Joe Bowers: But WHY do they use them to make Brawndo?
Secretary of Defense: [raises hand after a pause] Because Brawndo's got electrolytes.
He has the kind of songs that their culture should be PROUD of AND he slips into moments of chants and Native music so authentic that makes one's scalp ache. He's like the 'Boss' of the Native Americans rock-scene and puts on one HELL of a show (I guess he's still touring...I haven't seen him for a while).
My point is that you just have to find the right stuff out there. Big City or pueblo plateaus, if the Spirit is in it, that's all that matters. Just stay away from new age self-help and help yourself.
And don't buy any CDs of Peruvian Pan Flute Bands, either!
