we are the champions

Like romance and air hockey, online clickularity contests tend to reward enthusiasm. So it's no surprise, to us anyway, that the winning band in the first-ever City Paper vs. Y-Rock Philly Rock Shootout isn't just amazing musically — they also gave a damn. Getting out the vote is key (especially in a competition like this, where none of the participants knew they were in it until they were in it). In the end, it might've been the fervent online campaigning that helped Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer (pictured, repping CP) take down Dr. Dog (playing for Y-Rock).

Yes. Yes!

We at City Paper could not be happier. Not just because we're crazy Zolof fans. (After all, we dig Dr. Dog, too.) We are psyched that Zolof won stage time at a Y-Rock festival and the alt-weekly conference that's coming to town this summer. Good for them!

But also: Good for us!

See, Zolof has given us a selfish kind of happiness. We had a lot on the line in the Shootout. If Dr. Dog had tambourined their way to victory, Y-Rock would've been given custody of a full page in an upcoming City Paper music section. Space in our pages is very precious.

But, even cooler, the Zolof triumph means the City Paper staff gets to take control of Y-Rock on WXPN for an hour. As soon as we figure out when we're cashing that in, we'll let you know.

In the mean time, we've been brainstorming about what to do with the coveted time slot. I mean, it's not only Web radio, it's radio radio, too. We gotta make it count. Here's what we've come up with so far:

Ten Things City Paper Might Do with Its Hour on Y-Rock

10. Convicts Corner

9. Philadelphia Kixx call-in show

8. Saltine Bowl (eating contest)

7. A.D. Amorosi's Car Talk

6. John Prine Rock Block

5. Dramatic reading of City Paper, starting from the back

4. Michaela Majoun slash fiction

3. 450 Reasons Why The Arctic Monkeys Do Not Rock

2. Simulcast of 100.3 The Beat

1. City Paper Fund Drive

You guys SUCK for even thinking of simulcasting The Beat. That just brings back bad memories of the worst moment in philly radio history. Y100 ROCKS!! Or rocked at least. Ok, the idea of playing the beat is funny in an evil way. ALL HAIL YROCK!

Congrats! Zolof has been my favorite band since Jalopy Go Far came out!
But yeah, I agree with Sean L. I vote Number 3.
