This is one trio that actually earns the title "supergroup," not just thanks to the impressive résumés of all three members, but because the power each can exude warrants a big red "S" on their chests. Leader Tony Malaby possesses a brawny sax tone that can muscle its way through surrounding sound with broad shoulders, while capable of sudden turns to delicate emotion like a weeping construction worker. Drummer Nasheet Waits, the backbone of Fred Hersch's trio and Jason Moran's astounding Bandwagon, is a psychic juggler, able to keep several ideas in the air, responding and initiating all at once. And what's left to say about William Parker? The stalwart bassist refuses to rest on the vocabulary he's essentially defined, continually broadening the lexicon in response to each new interaction. Thrown together, you've got a stalemate among three Olympians, locked in battle and striving to test themselves against the best efforts of their rare equals.
