Depending on your tolerance for the soft and slow side of things and whether you think Dusty Springfield deserves a tribute or the final word, Just a Little Lovin' is either the best move Shelby Lynne could have made at this point in her two-decade career or the most foolish. On her 10th album, Lynne tackles nine songs from Springfield's repertoire and a solid heartbreaker of her own. No one would say she's embarrassed herself; the results are never less than pretty. She's certainly chosen her material well; whether it's a song everyone knows, like "I Only Want to Be with You" or "How Can I Be Sure," or a relative obscurity like "Willie and Laura Mae Jones," she sings with feeling and restraint, backed by a few essentials: keys, guitar, brushed drums. Is that enough? Listen to your heart. How quietly it beats, how completely alive.
