For Brett Webb-Mitchell — a father of two and a gay pastor — finding a relevant parenting guide was difficult. If a book was written by someone from the LGBTQ community, he found that faith was treated in a "cold, scientific manner." When written by a Christian, it felt like a "daily meditation guide" or a "theological argumentation." So the 52-year-old decided to fill the gap on the bookshelf himself. Full of stories, advice and resources, On Being a Gay Parent: Making a Future Together (Seabury Books) is a progressive and sensible handbook that embraces faith, family and being gay.

Web-Mitchell encourages everyone, regardless of faith or sexuality, to join the discussion at this Saturday's Giovanni's Room reading. "Where I hope this book really reaches people is that I'm really very interested in good parenting," he says. "I don't care if you're gay or straight, bisexual or transgendered. If you're a parent, you'll find something in this book about the inclusivity of love."
